It's that time of Year Again... make or break those New Year's Resolutions. One of the most popular resolutions is cleaning and decluttering. Need some motivation?
This article from Houselogic.com offers of some great tips and fun videos to help you launch your decluttering project. Think your too busy to declutter? Here's what I've found helpful:
1. Each day choose as much time as you think you can spare (i.e. 30 minutes, 1 hour), set your timer for that amount of time, and GO! Grab a garbage bag, box or what ever you need. Do as much as you can do during that time period. Once the time is up, you're done. It shouldn't matter that you didn't do everything done, what matters is you got something done. You certainly did more than you would have had you never started.
2. Start with the smallest things or the easiest room of the house. Once you get that first room clean or decluttered, you'll gain a sense of accomplishment making the others a bit easier.
3. Use the 1 year rule: If I haven't touched it in a year, it has to go. Another thing I tell myself is that if I'm not using it, there is probably a person who would.
*If you're a Home Seller or Just Planning to Move - Remember, you don't want to take unused things to your new home. That's more to pack, more to unpack, more to organize. Chances are, if you discard everything you don't need before you move, when you unpack at your new home, you'll STILL find somthing that makes you think, "Why did I keep this?" So let it go! You'll be glad you did. Also, Sellers, Don't wait until you get an offer on your house to start packing. It's a lot more stress to have to do it all after the contract.
You can get that warm, fuzzy holiday feeling and make a few bucks by responsibly ditching all the excess stuff you accumulate, particularly at this time of year. Read
