What Parents need to understand about kids and pools

Swimming Pool Safety in NC Pools

It’s That time of year again. Time for fun in the sun, laughing and splashing, and cooling of in the backyard or local swimming pool. Many homebuyers choose neighborhoods with community swimming pools. I recall spending many days at the swimming pool with my children when they were little. Before living in a neighborhood with a swimming pool, we had a pool in our backyard. One thing I can tell you for certain, You can NEVER be too safe when it comes to your children and swimming pools. Parents are the First responsible when their child is at the pool.

Let me put it another way, a child should NEVER be unsupervised in or near a swimming pool or around water.  This includes when a lifeguard is present. Some parents have a false security that lifeguards are watching their child. This is most likely not the case.

What Parents need to understand about kids and pools: Lifeguards, as diligent as they may be, do not relieve parents of their pool safety responsibilities. With hundreds of kids in the water, diving off the boards and playing on the pool deck, lifeguards cannot give children the individual attention required for their total safety. Parents are actually the first line of defense against accidents. Read the Full Story from Cary Citizen.

Parents, kids and Adults should know proper Safety when around swimming pools. Be Aware of Lifeguards are an important safety features BUT REMEMBER THEY are NOT intended to replace the close supervision of parents or caregivers. Remember, lifeguards are not babysitters.

Make sure you know how to recognize if someone is in trouble or drowning.

Drowning Statistics according to the CDC:

Who is most at risk?

  • Males: Nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male.2
  • Children: Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. In 2009, among children 1 to 4 years old who died from an unintentional injury, more than 30% died from drowning.1,2 Among children ages 1 to 4, most drownings occur in home swimming pools.2 Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children 1-4 than any other cause except congenital anomalies (birth defects).1 Among those 1-14, fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death behind motor vehicle crashes.1
  • Minorities: Between 2005 and 2009, the fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans was significantly higher than that of whites across all ages.2 The disparity is widest among children 5-14 years old. The fatal drowning rate of African American children ages 5 to 14 is almost three times that of white children in the same age range.2

Factors such as access to swimming pools, the desire or lack of desire to learn how to swim, and choosing water-related recreational activities may contribute to the racial differences in drowning rates. Available rates are based on population, not on participation. If rates could be determined by actual participation in water-related activities, the disparity in minorities’ drowning rates compared to whites would be much greater.5

Moral of the Story - Have fun this Summer but Be Smart, Be Safe, Be Diligent, and Be Attentive!
